Gettysburg and Emmitsburg will rally to support Ukraine

Area residents in Emmitsburg and Gettysburg are rallying to raise funds for immediate needs in war-ravaged Ukraine.

Cathy Bodin, who coordinates Emmitsburg’s Sister City program with the city of Lutsk, Ukraine, said interest in assisting Ukraine continues to widen.

“We are holding a Party in the Park for Ukraine on Friday, May 15,” she said, “at Gettysburg’s Rec Park Fireman Pavilion. The event kicks off at 5 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. We’re delighted to have willing partners working with us in the Gettysburg area.”

“Through direct contact with Ukrainians, we have made three shipments of relief supplies already this year,” Bodin said. “That includes food, medical supplies and clothing. This was only possible with such wide support from our area citizens and businesses.”

More recently, the organization’s Ukrainian contacts said their urgent need is for camouflage netting. Volunteers in small Ukrainian towns construct the nets from rolls of fabric, which cost about $300 per roll.

To raise awareness of current needs, as well as funds for Ukraine, the event will feature updates on the Sister City project, speakers, a bake sale, silent auction, pizza, and mocktails. All are welcome to attend and no reservations are needed.

Volunteers are also invited to assist at the rally and learn more about the Sister City project and its evolution.
